WMA Summer School Scholarships 2011

The John Horrocks Memorial Scholarship.

Organiser of the Workers Music Association's Summer School of music from its earliest years, this scholarship was begun when Joan Horrocks took over the task following John's untimely demise.  This Scholarship is for the full school fee, including accommodation and all meals, is for an applicant who qualifies by being active in the trade union or peace movement, and a practising amateur musician, whether vocal or instrumental, or a composer or conductor. Two referees are required, and for this year, one full place is on offer.

How to apply - Application forms are available from the WMA Summer School Co-ordinator, 12 St. Andrews Square, London W11 RH.     or  from      annefschuman@btinternet.com

Union Scholarships awarded to the WMA. Two unions who regularly for many years funded two scholarships each to the WMA school are the CWU and Unison. We treasured these links with the Union movement and the working people they represent and an implied recognition of the part that music can play in the work of the labour movement. Scholarships are awarded with two criteria in mind. Unions advertise internally and the names are forwarded to the WMA, who then examine the musical case for each nominee on the basis of the evidence of application to participation in musical activity. Overall this is similar to the conditions for the John Horrocks Scholarships mentioned above. Although two unions are mentioned here with whom we have a formal arrangement, we suggest that members of other unions might still promote the idea within their own organisation. We advise and urge Union members to seek support from their own organisations Some local Cooperative Societies will give grants for these music scholarships.

http://tonyohagan.co.uk/Scholarship, OR www.valentinealcockscholarship.org.uk

Although their web site has details of the scholarship which might be out of date, we suggests that an application for 2012 is likely to have similar conditions.

Another route to this scholarship is via the WMA Summer School, which is being held between 11th-17th August 2012 at Wortley Hall, Wortley, Nr. Sheffield. On receipt of a completed application form the WMA would then apply on your behalf.
