Value for Money

The level of charges for the 2012 school are given below. However, we have tried to keep them as low as possible. We are not interested in making profit, but usually have generous people giving donations to keep the cost of fees down.

Cost of a place 2012
£560 - Single accomodation with full meals and tea breaks.
£500 - Sharing a room with full meals and tea breaks.
£300 - Day student including tea breaks, lunch and evening meal.
£200 - Day student including tea breaks, and lunch.
£100 - Day student including tea breaks. No lunch or evening meal.

Session periods
At Wortley we allow 75 minutes per session, and we do not have to worry about inclement weather, because we are under cover at all times, we have two and a half hours per day for each course, which over the period of the school allows 12.5 hours on each course.

Furthermore, any teacher or lecturer will all know and tell you that in any session there is an initial 'settling-down' time, and at the end a 'winding-up' time, and these relatively less useful parts of a session are a greater proportion of a session the shorter the session is in length. Added to this the instruments are kept in the same building as our personal accomodation, and maintained at a fairly constant temperature, and we do not have to trek to other buildings for the course sessions. Those who have disabilities have less disadvantages at Wortley than they would have in other places with uneven terrain. Nor do we have to put on extra coats.

Other Costs
The WMA Summer School must be one of the best value-for-money Music schools currently in existence. The organisers are enrolled as students too; so they are no cost indirectly to other students. They also experience the courses and can appreciate where improvement can be sought and take this seriously. We assume students prefer that we keep costs down to essentials so all our spending is on essentials. As a result of a re-organisation our tutors are currently giving their servicers for just expenses. So we know they are not with us for the fees, and have a commitment to the 'School', although we would like to allow them to have some small amount of pocket money once we can make it possible. But we do not believe in the kind of fees seen elsewhere.

Quality of Outcome
Success of a school is strongly linked to the effort, enthusiasm and commitment of course members, i.e. those who attend the courses. No matter how good the tutors are what finally matters probably more is the energy, and dedication of the students, and the spirit of co-operation with other students. History suggests there is every reason to believe that such dedication and application has always been the prevailing ambience at the WMA Summer School. People come with a will to make that happen. Thus they are adding to their own enjoyment and enhancing their value for money.
